Itsy Bitsy Peanut?

Why do we use the phrase in a nutshell when we're summarizing something?  I mean, I get that nutshells aren't that big, but my explanations, no matter how brief, would probably not fit in a nutshell.  Unless it was a coconut.  Except that's not a nut, is it?  Now I'm confused and hungry.
